Challenge
The Papua New Guinean (PNG) government Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) Policy 2016 is an ambitious vision that sees SME as a core driver of economic growth. This includes growing the SME sector from 10% to 50% of the economy by 2030. Financial capital is emerging but investors are struggling to find strong investment opportunities in PNG. Likewise, SMEs make up a large portion of the economy yet struggle to access financial capital to grow and scale. Statistics show that only 20% of SMEs survive five years of operations.

Approach
Benefit Capital was engaged design and manage a pilot of Fusion, a people-to-people approach to guide SMEs on their investment pathway by building investment readiness, improving governance and equipping for growth.

Fusion partners with SMEs and connects them to incubation style support and capacity building that enables them to access capital to grow. This includes the necessary support to streamline due diligence processes (including deal structuring and investor relations), governance and reporting to ensure SMEs continue to deliver at the necessary standard.

Fusion provides opportunities to build skills, knowledge and experience that will create the right environment for success. SMEs will be supported to build the necessary track record and develop the internal capacity to run and manage a solid and sustainable SME that can consistently attract the capital needed to flourish.

Outcomes
Fusion value-adds to the PNG economic landscape through investment in emerging SMEs, ensuring that not only economic indicators are met, but that key social and community markers are also achieved, particularly for women and youth who will benefit most directly from a successful SME environment.
